Speech Therapy

Communication is the essence of human connection.

Whether you are seeking therapy for speech delays, articulation, language, swallowing, or cognitive skills, our team is here to help you or your loved one.

We provide speech therapy services for children and adults, in-person at our Newport News office or virtually throughout the state of Virginia.

Adult Therapy Services

  • Therapy focuses on improving communication skills that are affected by cognitive issues, often due to brain injury/Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke, Dementia or neurological conditions. Therapy targets improving memory, attention, problem-solving, and organizational skills that impact daily communication and independently completing everyday tasks.

  • Voice therapy is designed for individuals experiencing voice disorders (i.e. hoarseness, breathiness, pain, or fatigue while speaking).  Therapy targets vocal exercises that strengthen the vocal cords, improve pitch, volume, and quality of the voice. Techniques also involve teaching proper vocal hygiene and using strategies to reduce strain.

  • Dysphagia or swallowing therapy, targets improving swallowing safely.  Our therapy focuses on exercises to strengthen the muscles of the mouth and throat, strategies to make swallowing safer and easier, and dietary modifications.

  • Communication/Language therapy focuses on communication impairments, affecting the ability to speak, understand, or read. Therapy sessions focus on improving language skills like word finding skills.

  • Apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder that makes it difficult to articulate sounds, syllables, and words. This disorder is not due to muscle weakness but rather a difficulty in the brain's ability to plan the movement of lips, jaw, and tongue necessary for speech.  Therapy targets the retraining of oral-motor movements through structured repetition and practice. Exercises focus on sequencing and coordination of muscle movements for speech, along with rhythm and rate techniques to improve speech production.

  • Therapy is for both non-native speakers and professionals seeking clearer speech, our program focuses on pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm to improve speech clarity.

  • Gender Affirming Voice Therapy is designed to support clients in the transgender and gender-diverse community. Our training approach helps our clients align their preferred vocal expression with their gender identity in a safe and supportive environment.

Pediatric Therapy Services

  • Therapy is ideal for children who have difficulty with certain sounds or sound patterns, leading to speech that is hard to understand.

  • These disorders can affect how children understand what they hear (receptive language) and decreased ability to express their thoughts and feelings (expressive language). Therapy may target increasing vocabulary, following directions, answer questions, or putting ideas and thoughts into words.

  • Pragmatic or social skills therapy focuses on improving social communication, such as taking turns in conversation, understanding body language, reasoning, and interpreting social cues.

  • Our literacy and reading therapy focuses on helping children who may be struggling with their reading and writing skills. Therapy may include reading comprehension, and narrative tasks, aiming to enhance literacy skills.

  • Fluency therapy focuses on learning skills to smooth the flow of speech (speak more fluently) and teaches strategies to control the rate and rhythm of speech through exercises like breathing techniques.

  • Our Late Talkers Program focuses on improving communication skills through fun and engaging activities. Early intervention is key. If your child is showing signs of delayed speech, contact us to learn how we can help.
